How to read it
Each row is a generation and each line runs from parent to child. Read it top down: Chaos first, then the primordial powers, then the Titans, and the Olympians last. Notice that Aphrodite hangs straight off Uranus rather than Zeus: she was born from sea foam and is older than all of Olympus. And that Athena comes from Zeus and Metis, the Titaness he swallowed.
Quick questions
Who was the first Greek god?
Chaos, which meant an open void rather than disorder. Out of it came Gaia (the earth), Tartarus, Eros, Erebus and Nyx (the night). Gaia produced Uranus, the sky, on her own, and with him bore the Titans.
Are Zeus, Poseidon and Hades brothers?
Yes. All three are children of Cronus and Rhea, along with Hestia, Demeter and Hera. After beating the Titans they drew lots for the world: the sky to Zeus, the sea to Poseidon, the underworld to Hades.
Why is Aphrodite not a daughter of Zeus?
It depends on the source. In Hesiod she is born from the sea foam left when Uranus was maimed, which makes her of the Titan generation and older than Zeus. Homer instead calls her the daughter of Zeus and Dione. This tree follows Hesiod.
