Oceanus is the vast freshwater river that the ancients believed ringed the entire world, eldest of the Titans. Father of the three thousand Oceanid nymphs and of every river on earth, he is gentle and aloof, refusing to join the war against the Olympians. From his endless waters the sun rises and the stars dip down to rest.
