Metis is the embodiment of deep cleverness, the Titaness whose counsel helps Zeus free his swallowed siblings from Cronus. But warned that her child might surpass him, Zeus swallows her whole, and from his own splitting skull is born Athena, armed and wise. Metis lives on within him, the hidden source of the king of gods' own cunning.
