Nereus is the eldest son of Pontus and Gaia, a gentle and prophetic sea-god known as the Old Man of the Sea, father of the fifty Nereids by Doris. He is famed for his unfailing truth and his knowledge of all things hidden in the deep. When Heracles seeks the way to the garden of the Hesperides, he must seize Nereus and hold fast as the god twists through every shape until he yields the answer.
