Pontus is the Sea itself, brought forth by Gaia without a father in the first age of the world. From his union with the Earth come the old sea-gods, Nereus the truthful, Thaumas, Phorcys and Ceto, and through them the nymphs and monsters of the deep. He is the salt water before Poseidon, the ancient ocean that surrounds all lands.
