Gaia is the Earth itself, the first being to rise from Chaos and the womb from which all creation springs. She brings forth Uranus the sky, the mountains and the sea, then bears the twelve Titans. When Uranus's cruelty grows unbearable she forges a great sickle and arms her son Cronus against him: the first rebellion, and the spark that sets the whole cosmos turning. Ancient, patient and inexorable, she is less a goddess than the living ground beneath every myth.
