Chaos is the first of all, the dark formless gap that opens before anything exists. Neither god nor matter, it is pure potential, the silence out of which Gaia, Tartarus, Erebus, Night and Eros emerge. Every later god, every mountain and sea, every story traces its origin back to this gaping void at the beginning of the world.
