Tartarus is both a place and a primordial god, the bottomless pit that lies as far below Hades as the earth lies below the sky. It is the dungeon at the bottom of the cosmos, sealed with bronze gates, where Zeus casts the defeated Titans and the worst of the damned. Even the gods speak its name with dread.
