Mnemosyne is Memory itself, the Titaness in whom all knowledge and song are stored. Lying with Zeus for nine nights, she gives birth to the nine Muses, and so becomes the wellspring of poetry, history and art. In an age before writing, she is the goddess who keeps the past alive.
