Why Calliope comes first
Hesiod calls her "the most distinguished of them all." She got the most prestigious domain (epic, the genre of kings and wars) and the role of spokeswoman: when the Muses speak with one voice, it is Calliope's. Poets invoked her specifically: the first word of the Iliad is, literally, a request that the goddess sing.
Her son: Orpheus
Calliope is the mother of Orpheus, whose music stopped rivers and softened stones. It makes textbook sense: the greatest mortal musician could only be born of Olympus's most beautiful voice. The story of Orpheus and Eurydice (the descent into the underworld for love) is arguably the saddest myth in all of Greek mythology.
And why is a steam organ called a "calliope"?
In 1855 an instrument of steam whistles was patented in the United States for riverboats and circuses, audible for miles. It was named calliope with unintended irony: the Muse of the beautiful voice lending her name to the loudest instrument ever built.
