Eurydice is the wife of the musician Orpheus, killed by a viper's bite on their wedding day. Her grieving husband descends into the Underworld and so moves Hades and Persephone with his song that they release her, on one condition: he must not look back until both reach the light. A step from the surface he turns, and she slips away into the dark forever.
