Orpheus and Eurydice

His song could move the dead to mercy, if only he could keep from looking back.

When his bride Eurydice dies of a serpent's bite, the matchless musician Orpheus descends into the underworld itself. His grieving song so moves Hades and Persephone that they release her, on one condition: he must not look back until both reach the light. A single step from the surface he turns, and she slips into the dark forever.
