Agave is the daughter of Cadmus and mother of Pentheus, king of Thebes. Maddened by Dionysus for scorning his worship, she leads the Maenads in their mountain frenzy. In her delusion she mistakes her son for a lion and tears him apart, bearing his head home in triumph.
