Cadmus is the Phoenician prince who, searching for his sister Europa, follows an oracle to found the city of Thebes. He slays a dragon sacred to Ares and sows its teeth in the earth, from which armed warriors spring up and fight until only five remain to help him build. He weds Harmonia, daughter of Ares and Aphrodite, and is credited with bringing the alphabet to Greece.
