Semele is the Theban princess loved by Zeus and mother of his child Dionysus. Tricked by a jealous Hera, she demands her divine lover reveal himself in full, and the sight of his thunderbolts consumes her to ash. Zeus rescues the unborn Dionysus and sews him into his own thigh; in time the god descends to the Underworld and raises his mother up to Olympus.
