Dionysus is the god of wine, ecstasy, and the theater, twice-born after his mortal mother Semele is consumed by Zeus's glory and the unborn child is sewn into his father's thigh. He moves through the world spreading his rapturous rites, rewarding his followers with divine frenzy and destroying those who deny him, as the doomed king Pentheus learns. He is the god of liberation and madness, where joy and terror are never far apart.
