Pentheus is the young king of Thebes who refuses to honor his cousin Dionysus and outlaws the god's rites. Lured into the mountains to spy on the frenzied Bacchantes, he is mistaken for a wild beast and ripped limb from limb. His own mother Agave, lost in divine madness, tears off his head and parades it home in triumph, believing it the trophy of a lion.
