Hades is the eldest brother of Zeus and lord of the dead, who draws the gloomy underworld as his realm when the cosmos is divided. Stern and just rather than evil, he rarely leaves his shadowed kingdom, guarded by the hound Cerberus and ringed by the rivers of the dead. His one great passion is Persephone, whom he carries below to be his queen, binding the seasons themselves to her return.
