Rhea is the great Titaness of motherhood and flowing time, sister and wife of Cronus. Forced to watch her husband swallow each newborn child, she at last rebels: spiriting the infant Zeus away to a Cretan cave and handing Cronus a swaddled stone in his place. It is her quiet defiance that allows the next generation of gods to rise.
