Short answer: The mother of Zeus is Rhea, a Titaness, sister and wife of Cronus. Five children lost, one at a time
Cronus had heard the prophecy from his own parents: a son of his would do to him exactly what he had done to his father. His solution was to take each baby from Rhea's arms as it was born and swallow it whole. He did this five times. Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades and Poseidon all went the same way. Hesiod is blunt about the effect on Rhea: unending grief. What is easy to miss is that she carried five pregnancies to term knowing exactly how each would end.
The night she stopped
Pregnant with her sixth, Rhea went to her own mother, Gaia, and asked for a plan. Gaia and Uranus told her where to go and what to do. She travelled to Crete and gave birth at night, in secret, in a cave on Mount Ida (some sources say Mount Dicte, and the ancient Cretans argued about it too). Gaia took the baby to hide.
Then Rhea went back to her husband and put a stone in his hands, wrapped in swaddling clothes the size of a newborn. Cronus swallowed it without looking. That is the whole trick: he was so certain of his own method that he never checked.
Who raised Zeus
The infant was fed on the milk of the goat Amalthea and on honey, and guarded by the Curetes, armed young men who danced around the cave clashing spear on shield so that a crying baby could not be heard from outside. Some versions add nymphs, a golden cradle hung from a tree so the child was neither on earth nor in heaven nor in the sea, and a sow whose grunting covered the noise. The point is constant across versions: Zeus grew up out of his father's reach.
The stone came back up first
Grown, Zeus forced Cronus to disgorge what he had eaten. His five siblings came out alive and fully grown, in reverse order, which is why Zeus is the youngest and yet acts as the eldest. The stone came up first, before any of them.
Zeus set that stone at Delphi, and it stayed there as the omphalos, the navel of the world. Pausanias saw it in the second century AD and reported that oil was poured on it every day. Whatever the object actually was, people could still walk up and look at it more than a thousand years after the story was first told.
