Amalthea is the gentle nurse of the infant Zeus, who shelters him in a Cretan cave while Cronus hunts his children to devour them. Often pictured as a she-goat, she feeds the hidden god with her milk. From her horn flows endless plenty, the cornucopia, and her hide later becomes the aegis that Zeus bears into battle.
