The Curetes are the warrior spirits of Crete who guard the newborn Zeus from his devouring father Cronus. As the baby is hidden in a cave on Mount Ida, they dance and clash their spears against their shields, drowning out his cries so Cronus cannot hear. Their wild armed dance becomes part of the god's secret rites.
