The Underworld
The realm of the dead, ruled by Hades and Persephone beneath the earth.
Known also as Hades, sharing its name with its king, the Underworld was the destination of every mortal soul after death. Divided into regions for the wicked, the blessed, and the ordinary, it was bordered by five rivers: the Styx, Lethe, Acheron, Phlegethon, and Cocytus. The three-headed dog Cerberus guarded its gates, and the ferryman Charon carried souls across.
