Thanatos is Death himself, the winged son of Night who comes to carry each mortal soul down to the underworld when their thread is cut. Cold but not cruel, he is twin brother to Sleep, and once, famously, the crafty Sisyphus chains him, halting death on earth until the gods set him loose again.
