Orpheus is the greatest musician of myth, whose song charms wild beasts, halts rivers, and softens even stone. When his bride Eurydice dies, he descends into the underworld and so moves Hades and Persephone with his music that they grant her release, on the one condition that he not look back. A step from the light he turns, loses her forever, and wanders grief-stricken until he is torn apart by the Maenads.
