The Argo

Greek mythology

The Argo

The first great ship, built by divine craft, sailed by fifty heroes to the ends of the earth.

The Argo was built by the craftsman Argus, guided by the goddess Athena who incorporated into its prow a plank from the divine oak of Dodona that could prophesy. Named for its builder, the ship carried fifty of the greatest heroes of the age, the Argonauts, across the Black Sea to Colchis and back. It was the first vessel to brave the Clashing Rocks, navigate the Symplegades, and return carrying the Golden Fleece.
