Thetis is a Nereid of the sea, so desired that even Zeus withdraws when he learns her son will surpass his father. Wed against her will to the mortal Peleus, she bears Achilles and tries to burn away his mortality or dip him in the Styx. Knowing he is fated to die at Troy, she wins from Hephaestus new divine armor for her doomed son.
