Achilles is the greatest fighter of the Greeks at Troy, son of the sea-nymph Thetis, invulnerable but for the heel by which she held him. His wrath at Agamemnon withdraws him from battle and costs the Greeks dearly, until the death of his beloved Patroclus sends him storming back to kill Hector. Knowing he is fated to die young at Troy, he chooses everlasting glory over a long and quiet life.
