Patroclus is the dearest friend and companion of Achilles, fighting beside him at Troy. When Achilles withdraws in wrath and the Greeks are driven to their ships, Patroclus borrows his armor and leads the charge, routing the Trojans until Hector kills him before the walls. His death breaks Achilles' rage and sends him storming back to battle to avenge him.
