Troy, or Ilion, stood at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, a prosperous city protected by walls said to have been built by Poseidon and Apollo. For ten years, the greatest heroes of Greece besieged it over the abduction of Helen. The city's fall, accomplished through the treachery of the wooden horse, became the defining story of the Greek heroic age.
