Priam is the venerable king of Troy, father of fifty sons including Hector and Paris, who watches his city besieged for ten years. In the war's most piercing scene he crosses the enemy lines alone to kiss the hands of Achilles and ransom Hector's broken corpse. When Troy finally falls, the old king is cut down at his own altar by Achilles' son.
