Diomedes, king of Argos, is among the mightiest of the Achaeans at Troy, favored by Athena. In his battle-fury he wounds Aphrodite in the hand and drives his spear into Ares himself, sending the war-god howling back to Olympus. With Odysseus he raids the Trojan camp by night and steals the Palladium, the sacred image on which the city's fate depends.
