Ajax the Lesser is the swift-footed Locrian captain, deadly with the spear and second in speed only to Achilles. In the sack of Troy he drags Cassandra from Athena's altar and violates the sanctuary, earning the goddess' lasting hatred. Wrecked on the voyage home, he boasts that he escaped the sea against the gods' will, and Poseidon splits his rock from under him and drowns him.
