Ajax the Great is the mightiest Greek warrior after Achilles, a giant who shields the army behind his great tower-like shield. He duels Hector to a standstill and carries the dead Achilles' body from the field under fire. When Achilles' armor is awarded to Odysseus instead of him, maddened shame drives Ajax to slaughter a flock of sheep, and waking to his disgrace, he falls on his own sword.
