Short answer: the Odyssey is one man's ten-year attempt to sail home from a war he won. Odysseus leaves Troy with twelve ships and reaches Ithaca alone, where Penelope has held the kingdom twenty years. In between: ten stops. If the film brought you here, this is the map it works from.
The ten stops
1. Troy falls and the fleet leaves
The wooden horse is his idea: hollow it out, hide the best fighters inside, fake a retreat. Troy drags the trophy through its own walls and the war ends that night. He sails away the most famous man alive, and the fame is what ruins him.
2. The Lotus Eaters
The first temptation is not a monster. It is comfort. The locals offer a flower that erases homesickness, and the men who taste it stop wanting Ithaca at all. Odysseus drags them back to the ships in tears. You do not lose home by being beaten. You lose it by being content elsewhere.
3. Polyphemus the cyclops
Trapped in a cave by a one-eyed giant eating his men two at a time, Odysseus gives his name as "Nobody", gets the giant drunk, and drives a burning stake into the eye. The neighbours hear "Nobody is killing me" and go back to bed. A perfect escape, until Odysseus, safe at sea, shouts his real name. Polyphemus is the son of Poseidon, who hears it. Ten years of storms start with one sentence of vanity.
4. Aeolus and the bag of winds
The king of the winds gives him a bag holding every gale except the one blowing him home. Nine days of sailing. On the tenth, Ithaca is in sight and the shore fires visible, and Odysseus falls asleep. The crew, sure the bag is hidden treasure, open it. The winds carry them all the way back.
5. The Laestrygonians
A harbour built like a trap: narrow mouth, steep walls. Eleven ships row in, and giant cannibals on the cliffs spear sailors like fish and drop boulders through the hulls. Only Odysseus' ship, moored outside, escapes. In one afternoon he goes from a fleet to a single boat.
6. Circe
Circe drugs the scouting party into pigs, human minds intact inside the animals. Protected by a herb from Hermes, Odysseus resists and wins her over. Then the strange part: he stays a full year as her guest, and she becomes his most useful ally, telling him where to sail next and how to survive it.
7. The land of the dead
Her instruction is to reach the edge of the world and speak with the dead. He meets his mother, who died of grief waiting, and learns it there. The prophet Tiresias maps the rest of the route. And Achilles tells him he would rather be a poor man's hired hand among the living than king of all the dead.
8. The Sirens, then Scylla and Charybdis
Wax in the crew's ears, himself lashed to the mast: he hears the Sirens' song and lives, the only man who ever did. Then the strait, Scylla six-headed in the cliff on one side, Charybdis swallowing ships whole on the other. He steers at Scylla on purpose, knowing it costs six men, because Charybdis costs all of them. Leadership as arithmetic. He does not warn the six.
9. Calypso
His last ship burns, his last men drown, and he washes up alone on Calypso's island. She keeps him seven years, seven of the famous ten, and offers immortality if he stays. He sits on the beach weeping at the water, and says no. A mortal life on a rock with his wife beats being a god forever.
10. Ithaca
Home after twenty years, disguised as a beggar by Athena. His old dog Argos lifts his head from a dung heap, knows him, and dies. Penelope announces a contest: string Odysseus' bow, shoot through twelve axe heads, marry her. Every suitor fails. The beggar strings it in one motion and turns on the room. Then she tests him too, ordering their bed carried outside, a bed he built around a living olive tree and that cannot be moved. Only he could know. The poem ends not with a battle but with a password between two people.

Quick questions
How long did Odysseus take to get home?
Ten years of travel after ten of war, so twenty away from Ithaca. The surprise is the breakdown: seven of those sailing years are spent motionless on Calypso's island. The whole monster run, cyclops to whirlpool, fits inside a single year.
Why was Poseidon so angry with him?
Because Odysseus blinded his son Polyphemus, then made sure the giant knew which name to curse. Had he sailed off as "Nobody", the sea god would have had nobody to punish.
Is the Odyssey worth reading today?
Yes, and the shortest way in is to stop treating it as homework. Read Books 9 to 12, where Odysseus tells the monster stories himself, then Book 23, the bed test. If those land, the rest opens easily. Or start with the monsters or the women who run the plot.
You already speak this poem, from siren songs to being caught between Scylla and Charybdis: where those phrases came from. In MythologyNow the whole voyage is narrated like a film, one stop at a time.
