Circe is the goddess-witch of the island Aiaia, daughter of the sun-god Helios, mistress of potions and transformation. She greets Odysseus' crew with a feast and a wand, swelling them into grunting pigs. Warned by Hermes and armed with the herb moly, Odysseus resists her magic; she becomes his lover and keeps him a year before sending him on toward the land of the dead.
