Penelope is the wife of Odysseus, who holds Ithaca together through twenty years of his absence. Besieged by suitors who devour her household, she weaves a burial shroud by day and unravels it each night, vowing to choose a husband only when it is done. When Odysseus returns in disguise, she sets the test of his great bow and knows him by the secret of their immovable marriage bed.
