Calypso is the lovely nymph of the island Ogygia who takes the shipwrecked Odysseus as her lover and keeps him seven years, offering him immortality if he will stay. Though she cherishes him, he weeps each day for home and his wife Penelope. At last the gods command her to release him, and she helps him build a raft and sends him grieving on his way.
