Shield of Achilles

Greek mythology

Shield of Achilles

A divine masterwork forged by Hephaestus, a shield that depicted the entire world in its surface.

When Patroclus died wearing Achilles's original armor, his mother Thetis went to Hephaestus and begged him to forge new armor. The shield he created was a marvel beyond war, on its surface he depicted the earth, sky, and sea, two cities at peace and at war, farmers working their fields, a vineyard, a dance, and the great river Oceanus encircling everything. It was art and weapon in one, a world within a world.
