Hephaestus is the divine craftsman, god of fire and the forge, cast from Olympus and left lame yet unmatched in skill. From his anvil come Achilles' shield, the thunderbolts of Zeus, and Pandora, the first woman, shaped from clay. Wedded to unfaithful Aphrodite, he snares her and Ares in an unbreakable net of his own making and shames them before the laughing gods.
