Amphitrite is a Nereid and the queen of the sea, wooed by Poseidon who sends a dolphin to win her when she flees his suit. As his consort she rules the restless waters at his side and bears him Triton, the herald of the deep. The dolphin that carried his plea is set among the stars in her honor.
