Triton is the son of Poseidon and Amphitrite, a merman with a fish's tail and a man's torso. He sounds his twisted conch-shell trumpet to raise the waves or calm them at his father's will. Dwelling in a golden palace beneath the sea, he guides lost sailors and the Argonauts toward open water.
