Dione is a shadowy goddess of the earliest generations, named by Homer as the mother of Aphrodite by Zeus. When her daughter is wounded by Diomedes on the field of Troy, Dione tenderly soothes her at Olympus and reminds her how often gods have suffered at mortal hands. Her very name is the feminine echo of Zeus, marking her as his ancient partner.
