Hermes is the swift messenger of the gods, patron of travelers, merchants, thieves, and the cunning word, who crosses every boundary between worlds. On the day of his birth he steals Apollo's cattle and invents the lyre to charm him into friendship. Winged of sandal and quick of wit, he guides the souls of the dead down to Hades and carries Zeus's will wherever it must go.
