Prometheus, whose name means 'forethought,' is the cunning Titan who loves mortals more than the gods do. He tricks Zeus out of the best portions of sacrifice, then steals fire from heaven in a hollow reed and gives it to humanity, the spark of every art and craft. For this defiance Zeus chains him to a Caucasus crag, where an eagle devours his ever-renewing liver, until Heracles sets him free.
