Deucalion is the son of Prometheus, the one righteous man Zeus spares when he drowns a wicked world beneath the Great Flood. Warned by his father, he builds an ark and rides out the deluge with his wife Pyrrha, coming to rest on a lone mountaintop as the last of humankind. To repeople the silent earth, the oracle bids them cast the bones of their mother behind them, the stones of the ground, and where each falls a new human springs up.
