Horus is the falcon god of the sky and kingship, son of Osiris and Isis, and every living pharaoh was his earthly embodiment. After Set murdered his father, Horus grew up hidden in the marshes and fought his uncle for the throne in a long contest of battles and trials before the gods. He lost an eye in the struggle and won it back healed, and that restored Wedjat eye became Egypt's great emblem of protection and wholeness. His victory established him as the rightful king and the model of just succession.
