Solar Barque
The celestial boat that carries Ra across the sky by day and through the twelve gates of the underworld by night.
The solar barque was the celestial boat that carries Ra across the sky by day and through the twelve gates of the underworld by night. There were two, the day boat Mandjet and the night boat Mesektet, carrying Khepri at dawn and Atum at dusk. Its crew includes Thoth, Maat, Hu, Sia and Heka, with Horus at the helm and Isis lending magic.
Nightly, Apophis tries to stop it, and Seth spears him from the prow, as in Ra and Apophis: The Eternal Battle; in Horus and the Scorpions, Isis's cry makes the boat halt. Kings were buried with real boats; Khufu's, found at Giza in 1954, survives almost whole.
