Maat is truth, justice, and the right order of the cosmos itself, made into a goddess who wears a single ostrich feather upon her head. By her the sun rises on schedule, the seasons turn, and the king rules justly; without her the world slides back into chaos. In the hall of judgment her feather is set on the scales against the heart of the dead, and only the soul that balances it may pass into eternity. From the lowest laborer to the pharaoh, every Egyptian was held to her measure.
