Duat
The Egyptian underworld, a treacherous realm of twelve regions through which the sun god Ra travels each night.
The Duat was the Egyptian underworld, a treacherous realm of twelve regions, one for each hour of the night, through which the sun god Ra travels every night. Royal tombs map it in the Amduat and the Book of Gates, and wealthy non-royals carried the Book of the Dead to pass its gates and guardians.
Aker guards its horizons. Ra crosses it with Sia and Hu, Seth spears Apophis, and at midnight the sun merges with Osiris. In Osiris's hall Anubis weighs the heart, Thoth records the verdict and Ammit waits. It is the setting of The Journey Through the Duat and The Amduat: Ra and Osiris United.
